Andre Villas-Boas hails Tottenham’s ‘fantastic’ Jermain Defoe
Andre Villas-Boas singles out Jermain Defoe for special praise after the striker's goal helped Tottenham beat Manchester City
Andre Villas-Boas has singled out Jermain Defoe for special praise after the striker’s goal helped Tottenham to victory over Manchester City on Sunday.
The 30-year-old came off the bench and curled home a brilliant right-footed finish to put Spurs ahead in the game after Clint Dempsey’s equaliser cancelled out Samir Nasri’s opener, before Gareth Bale wrapped up a 3-1 win for the north Londoners.
Sunday’s strike was Defoe’s first goal since Boxing Day and his 15th of the season for Spurs – and Villas-Boas was full of praise for the forward.
“It was fantastic for him,” said Villas-Boas. “He’s been waiting for that goal for some time.
“He has made strong contact in front of goal but goalkeepers have been making impossible saves.
“This time, he scored a fantastic goal, coming inside onto his right foot. It was excellent for him.
“Credit to the three players who came into the game, their impact was massive. That made all the difference.
“I think when players come in with this spirit from the bench, with great determination, that’s what you need.”
