Arsene Wenger is confident that Arsenal can still secure Champions League qualification, despite watching his side play out a goalless draw with Everton.

The north Londoners’ best chances fell to Olivier Giroud but the France striker was unable to trouble Tim Howard as a battling Everton earned a well-deserved point at The Emirates.

The draw leaves Arsenal in third place in the Premier League table with five games left to play – but Chelsea and Tottenham can overtake the Gunners should they win their games in hand.

And Wenger said: “We are in a strong position but we have to win our next game [at Fulham on Saturday]. If we keep this spirit I’m sure we will get there.”

The Frenchman was adamant that Darron Gibson should have been sent off after referee Neil Swarbrick opted not to book the midfielder despite cynically clattering Theo Walcott to the ground after already having been booked.

“The referee let a lot go unpunished and in the end we put a lot of effort in,” added Wenger.

“I think Darron Gibson could have been sent off. He got away with a few tonight.

“The game was basically down to physical intensity, it was unbelievable from first to last minute. Maybe we used too much power instead of placing the ball. The finishing was missing.”
