Phil Jagielka insisted that Everton can still qualify for next season’s Champions League despite playing out a goalless draw with Arsenal at The Emirates.

Everton’s best chances fell to Steven Pienaar and Ross Barkley but neither side were able to make the breakthrough after an entertaining game in north London.

The draw leaves Everton in sixth place in the Premier League table and four points behind the Gunners, who remain in third with five games left to play.

[Our Champions League hopes] are not over,” Jagielka told Sky Sports. “I said before that we need favours from other teams and that’ll still be the case.

“If we’d have lost tonight it would have been an even bigger hurdle for us to get over.

“We’ll keep battling on. As long as we’re in there for as long as possible we’ve had a good season.”

Everton and Arsenal managed to conjure a total of 31 shots during a lively encounter – and the defender was pleased to see the Toffees return to Merseyside with a clean sheet.

He added: “It was quite an exciting game, especially in the first half. I’m sure it was a good game other than the lack of goals.

“We looked a little bit edgy. We both gave each other quite a lot of respect because of the run of forms that both teams are in; we’ve both got a lot to play for [but] they’re a little bit closer to where they need to be.

“We knew it would be hard coming down here. We’ve struggled to get points at The Emirates and it was nice to come away with a clean sheet today.”
