Arsenal 1 Man United 1: Theo Walcott says a draw was a "very fair" result after the Gunners are held by the newly-crowned champions
Theo Walcott felt a draw was a “very fair” result after Arsenal were held by Manchester United at The Emirates.
Walcott fired the Gunners into an early lead in north London after Arsene Wenger’s men formed a guard of honour for the newly-crowned champions before kick-off.
But Robin van Persie – returning to The Emirates for the first time since his £24m move to Old Trafford – hauled United back level with a well-taken penalty on the stroke of half-time after he was brought down by Bacary Sagna in the box.
“If you look back at both halves I think it [the result] was very fair,” Walcott told Sky Sports. “Both teams didn’t want to lose the game.
“In previous weeks we might have gambled a bit more than we normally do but I think overall it will be a good point come the end of the season.
“We’ve got to be proud of ourselves and it was a good points.”
Walcott, whose goal was his 12th Premier League strike of the season, added: “I like that out-to-in run and I just play to the whistle.
“People told me it was offside but it’s not my problem, I need to make sure I finish it.”
“I’m happy with the goal but I wish we had the three points.”
The result leaves Arsenal in fourth place in the Premier League table, with Chelsea moving up to third and a point clear of their London rivals after their 2-0 victory over Swansea.
The Gunners now have three games left to cement Champions League qualification, and Walcott said: “We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves.
“We can’t keep relying on teams to beat whoever. As long as we get the three points and don’t drop any points, that’s all we can do.”
Arsenal travel to relegated Queens Park Rangers for their next Premier League game on Saturday.
