Arsenal’s Wenger had ‘no doubt’ Van Persie would be a hit at Man United
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims he never had any doubt that Robin van Persie would be a success at Manchester United
Arsene Wenger insists that he never had any doubt that Robin van Persie would be a success at Manchester United.
The 29-year-old Netherlands international sealed a £24m move to Old Trafford from Arsenal last August and has hit the ground running, netting 24 Premier League goals to help the Red Devils win their 20th top-flight crown.
And although the Frenchman concedes that Arsenal have missed Van Persie, who spent eight years in north London, the Gunners boss is focused on masterminding a victory over United at The Emirates on Sunday.
“He is a massive talent with world-class technique and huge experience with the national team and in the Champions League. I had no doubt he’d adapt,” Wenger told a news conference on Friday.
“I think Arsenal had a positive impact on the life and career of Robin van Persie.
“You always miss a big player but now we are stabilised. We are on a very strong run. We have a good level of confidence and a great desire.
“What we know is that we will need a great performance to beat Manchester United. That’s what we will focus on.”
Wenger also confirmed that Arsenal will form a guard of honour for the newly-crowned Premier League champions before Sunday’s game in north London.
“I want the traditions of English football to be respected,” Wenger continued.
“We respect Robin van Persie like every other player who has left and comes back. I want the player to be respected.”
