Arsenal transfers: Dein convinced Wenger will strengthen squad
Arsenal transfers: David Dein is convinced that Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash to bolster his squad in the summer
David Dein is convinced that Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash to bolster his Arsenal squad in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners are 19 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United as Wenger’s men battle with north London rivals Tottenham for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Arsenal, who have not lifted a trophy since the FA Cup in 2005, have been linked with moves for a host of players in recent months, including QPR striker Loic Remy and Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
And former Arsenal vice-chairman Dein expects the Frenchman to be active in the transfer market this summer.
“Clearly they have fallen 20 odd points behind Manchester United which is not good enough and it speaks for itself that he has to strengthen the team and I know he will do that,” Dein told BBC Radio Five Live.
Dein also refuted suggestions that Wenger, 63, is considering quitting the club after an eighth season without a trophy.
“I think he has the fire in his belly,” he added. “I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be there.
“He is one of the best managers in the world. He has been coaching for 30 years. He knows what he is doing. He knows what he wants and I think it’s just a question of identifying the right talent.”
Arsenal, who are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table, host Norwich City at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
