Gary Neville has described Barcelona star Lionel Messi as “greatness re-defined” after the playmaker’s starring performance in the Champions League on Wednesday.

With Barcelona trailing 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate, Messi was introduced in the second half of their quarter-final second-leg tie against Paris Saint-Germain despite carrying a knee injury.

And Messi changed the complexion of the clash at the Camp Nou as Barça suddenly looked more threatening, with the Argentine playing a part in Pedro’s equaliser which saw Barcelona progress on away goals.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored a staggering 57 goals this season, and former Manchester United defender Neville believes Messi transforms Barça from a very good team into a great side.

“For me, greatness was re-defined on Wednesday night. I would say a player who can change an entire stadium and turn a match around simply by walking on to a pitch redefines greatness,” Neville said in the Mail.

“You put Messi into that team and you’re transforming a very good team into the greatest team of all time.

“It was felt as though something spiritual had happened. You really had to be in that stadium on Wednesday night to appreciate the magnitude of Lionel Messi and the impact he can have.”
