Ben Foden admits his rushed return from an ankle injury did not help his England chances in this year’s Six Nations but the full-back insists he is finally back firing on all cylinders.

The 27-year-old suffered ligament damage to his ankle last September while playing for club side Northampton against Bath.

The injury put Foden, who has 30 England caps to his name, out of action for three months and forced him out of contention for the autumn internationals.

And since then Foden has had to look on as Alex Goode has established himself as Stuart Lancaster’s first-choice full-back with fellow domestic rival Mike Brown playing on the wing.

But despite the setback Foden insists he is finally now back to his best, just in time for a potential British and Irish Lions tour or indeed England’s summer tour to Argentina.

“I’m perfectly aware there are a number of very good players out there who play in my position,” he said.

“I’m also aware that I’ve missed a chunk of the season, a vital one in terms of all the possible internationals I may have played in.

“But I’m pleased with my form now and accept this is my last chance to knock on the Lions door.

“If I don’t go, there are other tours to tilt for. I’ve a lot to be thankful for. The injury was a bad one, affecting both sides of the ankle.

“Then I made it worse by trying to come back too soon. It felt fine at first but then I began to feel some niggles in the ankle.

“I was called into the Six Nations squad but training on hard grounds — it was snowing at the time and we sometimes trained on an artificial surface — didn’t help.

“But I did received great support, from both England and Northampton.

“I was given a steroid injection and told to rest. The swelling went down very quickly and I have not looked back since taking that rest.

“I don’t want to tempt fate but I’ve never felt fitter or better.”
