Borussia Dortmund 4 Real Madrid 1: Lewandowski thrilled with four goals
Borussia Dortmund 4 Real Madrid 1: Robert Lewandowski warns his goals will count for nothing if his side don't reach the final
Robert Lewandowski admitted he was thrilled to bag a stunning four-goal haul to help Borussia Dortmund sink Real Madrid – but warned it will count for nothing if his side do not reach the Champions League final.
The Poland striker put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute before Cristiano Ronaldo levelled just before half-time.
But three goals in 17 second-half minutes from the forward helped the Bundesliga side take a giant stride towards the showpiece at Wembley, ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg in the Spanish capital.
“I’m happy to have scored four goals, but obviously the big picture is reaching the final and that’s the only thing that counts,” said man-of-the-match Lewandowski.
“Real played well in the first half but we had things under control in the second half.”
Meanwhile, Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos criticised his side’s attitude after the comprehensive defeat.
“We were lacking in attitude and I point to myself first when I say that,” said the Spaniard. “It will be very difficult in the return leg at home but we must remain confident and try to react.
“When the draw for the semi-finals was made a lot of people thought this was going to be easy for us but this is a German team we are talking about; they are a great side.”
