Chelsea 1 Man United 0: Cech reflects on ‘lucky’ save from Hernández
Chelsea 1 Man United 0: Petr Cech admits he was "lucky" to keep out Javier Hernández's header with a superb save in the second half
Petr Cech admitted he was fortunate to keep out Javier Hernández’s header with a superb save in the second half as Chelsea reached the FA Cup semi-finals at the expense of Manchester United.
After an uninspiring first half at Stamford Bridge, Demba Ba gave the Blues the lead when he volleyed home Juan Mata’s pass four minutes after the restart.
United could have equalised when Hernández headed Danny Welbeck’s cross goalwards in the 61st minute, but a brilliant save by the Chelsea goalkeeper kept the home side in front.
“It was a great ball from the winger and I thought that Chicharito [Hernández] did really well to get the ball directed into the goal,” Cech told ITV1.
“I just went as fast as I could and obviously I left my left arm to do the job. I tried to cover as much space as I could and luckily I was able to reach it.”
Chelsea will now play Manchester City for a place in the final at Wembley – and Cech believes the Blues’ impressive FA Cup form is down to the respect they show the competition.
“It was a great win,” he added. “There’s only one way to win the cup, we knew that we had to win the game and we did it in very good fashion as well.
“We love that stadium [Wembley] and we respect the FA Cup a lot and that’s why we always do well in it. We always want to win.”
Meanwhile, man-of-the-match Ba praised Mata for the ball that set up his winner.
“It was a brilliant pass from Juan,” said Ba. “With Newcastle I scored a similar one against United so when I scored this one it just reminded me about Newcastle.”
The striker added: “The win is very good for us and out confidence for the rest of the season.”
