Sir Alex Ferguson admits his Manchester United side were punished for switching off after Demba Ba’s stunning volley sent Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals.

Ba gave the Blues the lead in the 49th minute at Stamford Bridge when the Senegal striker volleyed home Juan Mata’s pass.

Ferguson told ITV1: “We spoke about Ba and the experience we had an Newcastle a couple of years back when he scored exactly the same type of goal.

“We always have to be aware of that type of execution of the shots he does and we were caught napping to be honest.”

United’s best chance of an equaliser fell to Javier Hernández in the 61st minute, but Petr Cech produced an outstanding save to deny the Mexican.

And Ferguson concedes that his side were second best on the day as they turn their attentions back to the Premier League as their only remaining chance of a trophy this term.

He continued: “After [the goal] we lacked the composure to win the game. We had a lot of possession but didn’t make the best use of it.

“On the counter-attack they caused us quite a few problems. Fortunately we didn’t lose another goal but I couldn’t see us scoring ourselves apart from Robin van Persie’s fantastic chance – he should have scored from that – and Cech’s fantastic save from Chicharito [Hernández].

“We just lacked the composure when we had to chase the game.”
