Hamann, Hislop & more: Twitter reacts as Real Madrid thrash Gala
Dietmar Hamann and Shaka Hislop both tweet their thoughts after Real Madrid eased to a 3-0 victory over Galatasaray
Real Madrid took a giant stride towards the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Galatasaray on Wednesday night.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and substitute Gonzalo Higuain gave Jose Mourinho’s men a comfortable win at the Bernabeu.
The game inevitably prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates from the professionals, both past and present.
Aston Villa’s Carlos Cuellar (@Cuellar24) gives us his pre-match prediction: “I’m watching R.Madrid vs Galatasaray I will say 2-1 #ChampionsLeague”
Do we detect some sarcasm from ex-Republic of Ireland international Matt Holland (@mattholland8)? “I wish Ronaldo would learn to relax in those situations!! 1-0 Madrid”
Former Norwich City man Iwan Roberts (@iwanwroberts) is in awe of the Portugal star: “Such a cool finish #Ronaldo”
Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) is impressed by Real Madrid’s second goal: “Benzema tidy finish to make it 2-0. Drogba & co are decent but Madrid are clinical – slow tweet making a cuppa -:)”
Ex-Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) is not surprised to see Wesley Sniejder subbed at half-time: “Sneijder taken off at half-time! There’s a surprise for you. He is SO yesterday’s news!!! #viasatfotball”
Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) heaps praise on another ex-Liverpool man after Madrid’s third: “What a ball that was from Alonso, he is a pleasure to watch. I’d love to see @XabiAlonso back at Anfield, but not sure whether there is any truths in it. I can’t really see it happening”
Ex-Crystal Palace forward Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) chimes in: “Have the Spanish TV fallen out of love with Jose? no cut aways of him at all. #championsleague”
Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is not surprised to see Burak Yilmaz get booking for diving, despite replays showing he was caught by Sergio Ramos in the box: “If a player goes down in the box it seems to be a pen or a booking these days.Wrong that Yilmaz got booked …Also a Juve player yesterday”
England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) reckons Ramos and Alonso’s bookings were deliberate: “2 deliberate premeditated bookings for RM. both Alonso and Ramos now free from semis on. We’ve seen it before.”
And here’s former Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop (@ShakaHislop) to have the final say: “Real Madrid did not get out of second gear tonight. Xabi Alonso was quietly BRILLIANT!”
