Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the Europa League after losing 4-1 to Basel on penalties in the second leg of their quarter-final.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by Benfica, with Chelsea the sole English representative in Friday’s semi-final draw after their triumph over Rubin Kazan.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction in chronological order to a mixed night for the Premier League sides in Europe.

Injured Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale ‏(@GarethBale11) wishes his team-mates all the best: “Bigggg game tonight, come on lads, let’s get the job done #COYS!”

Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler ‏(@Robbie9Fowler) has a good start to his betting night: “Thought chelsea were a great price today…. 17/10, so far so good on the acca!”

Chelsea Demba Ba (‏@dembabafoot) praises his team-mates after Fernando Torres gives the Blues an early lead in Russia: “What a pass and what a finish. Well done boys!”

Ex-Newcastle midfielder Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) reckons his former side have a tough task beating Benfica: “Very impressed by Benfica, the only team to stop Chelsea win the Europa League.”

Now for some English lessons by Lord Sugar ‏(@Lord_Sugar): “Seems the correct pronunciation of Basel. Sounds like Barle which is what I thought. I’ve been there and heard people refer to it that way.”

Former Magpies star Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) is disappointed to see Newcastle crash out: “Gutted to see Newcastle go out. Benfica are a good European club, with lots of European competition experience. #greatrunfromthetoon”

And Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul (@TimKrul) adds: “We gave everything tonight it’s a shame it wasn’t to be. Atmosphere was amazing. Proud to be a Geordie.. Bring on Sunday.. #derbyday”

As the Spurs match heads to penalties, Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier ‏(@mattletiss7) is well-placed to judge a spot-kick having missed just one in his career: “Wow these Basel boys are good at pens!”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) is confused about which sport is on the television after Adebayor’s miss: “Switched to the golf and Adebayor’s ball has just landed on the 13th green. He’s sure to miss the putt.”

Ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor ‏(@NeilMellor33) can’t believe how bad Adebayor’s attempt was: “Seen some bad pens before but that was the worst run up I have ever seen from Adebayor! His penalty matched his run up!! #awful”

Former Sunderland midfielder Michael Gray ‏(@mickygray33) is shocked to see the striker smile after his miss: “Did I just see Adebayor smile when he missed his penalty? How much does he REALLY care? #shocking”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) has worked out what Adebayor’s run-up was about: “Adebayor was actually performing a new dance as he ran up to take that penalty – “The Choking Cockerel”!”

Finally, Spurs youngster Harry Kane (‏@hkane28) is gutted for his senior colleagues: “Felt for spurs there ! Lads worked there nuts off! They gave it a good go but hard with 10 men! #coys”
