Heineken Cup 2013: Toby Flood relishing Jonny Wilkinson test
Heineken Cup 2013: Toby Flood is relishing the prospect of going up against Jonny Wilkinson when Leicester take on Toulon
England fly-half Toby Flood is relishing the prospect of going up against former Red Rose team-mate Jonny Wilkinson in the European Cup this weekend.
Flood and Wilkinson both came through the ranks at Newcastle and also played alongside each other for England before the latter’s retirement after the last World Cup.
The Leicester fly-half is now fighting for England’s first choice spot with Owen Farrell, and started the 18-11 win over Italy in the Six Nations.
On Sunday, he and his Leicester side travel to Toulon to take on Wilkinson and co and Flood admits the Tigers will need to be wary of the ability of the French side to turn every opportunity into points.
He said: “Toulon control territory very well and will aim to build momentum, and Jonny will orchestrate that. He will want to play quick, on top of us.
“Any time their momentum stalls, he will just take two or three steps back, drop it on to his right or left foot and bang it through the posts.
“He looks just as sharp as he was in the past and just as hungry. He’s hitting more breakdowns in a game than most tens do in a week. As he said when he spoke about wanting to continue, it is all about whether he can still give something to the side.
“He’s always been like that, thinking about what he can give, not what he can gain. He is definitely giving something to that Toulon side, and that is what matters to him.”
