Jamie Carragher: Liverpool relying on rivals to slip-up in top-four race
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says the Reds are relying on other teams to falter in the race to secure a top-four finish
Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool are relying on other results to go in their favour in the battle to secure a top-four finish.
Brendan Rodgers’ men are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, with Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur also hoping to claim a place in next season’s Champions League.
The Reds face both Rafael Benítez’s side and the Toffees at Anfield in their remaining seven fixtures, while their other games are against teams in the bottom half of the table.
But Carragher concedes that Liverpool need other teams to slip up if the 18-time English champions are to have a chance of sneaking a fourth-place finish.
“It all depends on other teams,” Carragher told the Liverpool Echo. “You just go onto the next game, try and win that and not look too far ahead.
“We have West Ham at home next and they’ve had a good win at the weekend. So I don’t ever look too far ahead and look at the seven games left and Europe.
“To be honest, if you asked most of the lads I don’t think they’d know what position will get us into Europe this season!
“Sometimes it’s fifth, sometimes sixth and sometimes seventh so you’re not really sure. All we can do is carry on winning games and see where it takes us.”
