He’s a little genius! John Aldridge hails Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge describes Philippe Coutinho as a "little genius" after his display at Newcastle
John Aldridge has described Philippe Countino as “a little genius” after the Liverpool playmaker’s mesmerising display in a 6-0 win at Newcastle United.
The Brazil international thrived as the focal point of the Reds’s side in the absence of Luis Suárez, making two assists while also hitting the crossbar in the second half at St James’ Park.
Coutinho has surprised many by his instant impact in the Premier League despite his diminutive frame, scoring twice and creating five goals in 10 top-flight appearances.
The 20-year-old joined in a £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in the January transfer window, and Aldridge reckons there is much more to come from the midfielder.
“Philippe Coutinho was a little genius on Saturday,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“He had previously shown glimpses of what he can do but against Chelsea the week before he had struggled. They got tight on him and he couldn’t get into the game.
“But he bounced back at St James’ with his best performance for the club and he was my man of the match.
“Coutinho was given so much time and space and took full advantage. I don’t know what Newcastle were playing at.
“Brendan Rodgers got his tactics spot on with a formation designed to make up for the loss of Suárez. It worked a treat with Coutinho playing in that central role behind Daniel Sturridge. That has to be the way forward for the rest of the season.
“Coutinho has got goals in him and he will create a lot for others as well.”
