John Terry has revealed that Chelsea’s Champions League defeat by Monaco in 2004 still frustrates him – but acknowledges that things could have been very different at Stamford Bridge should they have lifted the trophy that season.

Chelsea, playing under manager Claudio Ranieri, booked their place in the semi-finals thanks to a dramatic 2-1 win over Arsenal at Highbury after Wayne Bridge netted a late winner for the Blues.

But the west Londoners’ hopes of lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time were ended after a 5-3 aggregate loss to Monaco in the last four.

Jose Mourinho’s Porto went on to win the competition and the Portuguese coach took over at Stamford Bridge later that summer.

And although Terry admits that the semi-final loss still haunts him, the Chelsea captain accepts that the Blues may not be in the position they are today if they had won the trophy that season.

“It still frustrates me now, that one,” Terry told Chelsea’s website.

“To go to Highbury and win at Arsenal, we were on such a high and I really fancied us to go all the way. We had a real chance, and we completely messed it up.

“Looking on the flip side though, had we gone on and won it, would we then have got Jose Mourinho in and done what we did after and be what we are today? Maybe not.

“The team we had out in Monaco, to lose how we lost, was ridiculous.”
