Sam Allardyce admitted West Ham United’s poor finishing cost them three points after the Hammers were held to a goalless draw at Liverpool.

The visitors made the brighter start at Anfield, with Mohamed Diame firing over the crossbar before Carlton Cole had an effort blocked by Daniel Agger.

Rodgers’ men slowly improved and Steven Gerrard had an attempt cleared off the line by James Tomkins, while Luis Suárez peppered Jussi Jaaskelainen’s goal with attempts.

The home side had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Anthony Taylor in the second half, while Hammers midfielder Jack Collison almost snatched a late winner.

“I am content, even though we should have won the game,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.

“We nullified Liverpool’s strengths and created the better chances to score. I’m delighted. It’s only the cost of our finishing that has cost us the three points.

“Jose Enrique kicked James Tomkins when we should have had a penalty but I am satisfied with the performance and result. We know we’ve created better chances than Liverpool, even though they had more possession.”

West Ham move seven points clear of the relegation zone, while Liverpool are now nine points behind fourth-placed Tottenham.
