Liverpool’s 6-0 rout the best result by any club this season, says Aldridge
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge hails Liverpool's 6-0 win at Newcastle as the best result across the Premier League this term
John Aldridge says Liverpool’s 6-0 thrashing of Newcastle United on Saturday was the best result in the Premier League by any club this season.
The Reds, without the services of banned Luis Suárez, produced a scintillating attacking performance to dismantle a struggling Magpies side at St James’ Park.
Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge both scored braces, while Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini netted either side of half-time, with Brazilian Philippe Coutinho pulling the strings in midfield.
And former Reds striker Aldridge, who played in the club’s famous 5-0 victory over Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1988, reckons Brendan Rodgers’s side produced the performance of the season in the English top flight.
“Liverpool’s thrashing of Newcastle United has to be the result of the season across the Premier League,” he wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“I certainly didn’t see that coming. I was pretty pessimistic after what had happened earlier in the week but Liverpool were top class from start to finish.
“To go away to a tricky place like St James’ Park and completely dominant like that was remarkable. Okay, Newcastle were rubbish but the fact is we made them look bad with some brilliant attacking football.
“It reminded me of what sometimes happens when you go down to 10 men. The rest of the players raise their game and try to make up for who is missing.”
He added: “With everyone going on about Liverpool being a one-man team and saying they would struggle without Luis Suárez, the players went out there with a point to prove.”
