Daniel Sturridge admits he had a point to prove against Chelsea after the Liverpool striker scored in a 2-2 draw with the Blues on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was introduced as a half-time substitute and made an instant impact, hitting the woodwork before finishing a slick Reds move in the 52nd minute.

With Eden Hazard putting Chelsea into a 2-1 lead from the spot, Sturridge provided Luis Suárez with a perfectly-weighted cross for the Uruguayan to head past Petr Cech in the seventh minute of added time.

Sturridge decided to swap Liverpool for Chelsea in a £12m deal in the January transfer window after scoring 24 goals in 96 appearances in a difficult four-year spell at the Blues which the England forward spent largely on the sidelines.

And the former Manchester City youth graduate revealed he was desperate to have an impact on the Anfield clash.

“I was disappointed not to start because the manager would have known I was a bit angry with Chelsea and wanted to prove a point against them,” Sturridge said.

“It was strange playing against them because I only left three months ago so I kind of knew their weaknesses and what their team was all about.

“I was itching to get on and the team performed well in the second half. We started attacking a lot more; in the first half we were a little bit defensive.

“The game opened up and we showed what we’re all about – it was good.”
