Jordan Henderson hailed Daniel Sturridge as a “top player” after the Liverpool striker’s brace in a 6-0 victory at Newcastle United on Saturday.
The 23-year-old, who returned to the starting line-up in the place of the suspended Luis Suárez, created Henderson’s opener against the Magpies with an unselfish pass.
The former Chelsea man, who moved to Liverpool in January, then scored twice in the space of six second-half minutes to secure three points for Brendan Rodgers’s men at St James’ Park.
Sturridge has now scored seven Premier League goals after completing a £12m move to the Reds in January, and Henderson has been impressed by his compatriot’s impact.
“Overall it was a great performance by the team,” Henderson told Liverpool’s website.
“We were at them straight from the off and we scored some good goals as well, so we are over the moon.
“Daniel is a top player. I played with him before he signed for us with England U21s quite a few times so I know what he’s all about.
“He’s got great movement, he’s got great technical ability and he’s been brilliant since he came here.”
Meanwhile, Henderson is pleased with his recent resurgence at Anfield, with the England international cementing his place in Rodgers’s starting line-up with two strikes.
“I still feel I can improve in some areas but I’m enjoying my football at the moment,” he added.
“I’ve just got to keep working hard and just keep doing what I’m doing and help the team do well.
“It was important we finished this week on a high. It has been a bit chaotic but I thought the players handled it brilliantly and we put on a great performance today.
“We now look forward to the derby and we want to win for our supporters.
“We just want to win as many games as we can and finish the season on a high.”
