Jamie Carragher admits it is vital that Liverpool keep hold of Luis Suárez this summer as they look to break back into the top four next season.

Suárez’s future has been a source of speculation in recent weeks after the Uruguayan’s admission that he may be open to talking to clubs who can offer him Champions League football next term.

Liverpool are currently seventh in the Premier League table and face a battle to snatch a Europa League spot for next season.

And Carragher concedes that it is crucial that the Reds hold on to their top players as they look to navigate their way back into European football’s elite club competition.

“[Suárez] is vital,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He is one of the top players, not just in the Premier League, but in world football.

“We are desperate to keep him, I’m sure he will be staying, I think he loves it here and the fans love him.

“It’s not just Suárez, we have got lots of top players and we want to keep hold of them all. That is important for the club.

“Where we are in the league, it’s important that we improve the squad and bring in some additions.”

Suárez, 26, has scored 25 goals in 36 appearances for Liverpool this season and currently tops the Premier League goal-scoring charts with 22 strikes to his name.
