Liverpool transfers: Reds managing director Ian Ayre insists Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez is not for sale in the summer
Ian Ayre has reiterated that Liverpool have no intention of selling striker Luis Suárez this summer.
The 26-year-old has scored 22 goals and made four assists in 32 Premier League appearances this season, prompting interest from a host of top clubs across Europe.
Serie A champions Juventus have been heavily linked with a move to sign the prolific forward, with Suárez openly admitting his desire to play in the Champions League.
But managing director Ayre says Liverpool, who are in seventh position and eight points adrift of the top four, will not consider selling one of their best players at the end of the season.
“To play at the highest level in the Premier League and European soccer, you need players like Luis and Steven Gerrard on your team. So the last thing in our mind is selling Luis Suárez. He’s not for sale. It’s not something we’re interested in,” he told Sports Illustrated.
“I remember when they [Fenway Sports Group] bought the team, John [Henry] made a comment in the media: We don’t want to just build a team to win but to keep winning. To do that you have to have a number of world-class players on your team.”
Ayre also backed Brendan Rodgers’ January transfer signings, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, after the pair made an immediate impact at the Merseyside outfit.
“We were very pleased with the most recent window in January with Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge. It’s a combination of skills and people and processes that bring us to what we’re trying to achieve.”
