Xabi Alonso admits he is yet to make a decision about whether his long-term future lies at Real Madrid amid reports of a potential return to Liverpool in the summer.

The 31-year-old’s Los Blancos contract is set to expire at the end of the 2013-14 campaign but the midfielder is still to agree a new deal at the Bernabeu.

Alonso spent five years at the Merseyside outfit before completing a £30m move to the La Liga champions in 2009, winning the Copa del Rey and Spanish league title.

Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for the Spain international at the end of the season, but Alonso stressed that he is committed to Madrid until the end of his deal.

“I haven’t yet decided my future – I am signed to Real Madrid until 2014 and that is my situation,” Alonso was quoted as saying by the Sunday People.

Alonso is also relishing the prospect of watching Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea, having played in two Champions League semi-finals against the Blues during his spell at the Reds.

“Matches between Chelsea and Liverpool during Mourinho’s time were always hard and very difficult to win,” he added.

“In those years Liverpool were terrific against them. We increased the level of our game.

“Tactically, those matches were battles and on the pitch there was so much intensity.”
