Blaise Matuidi struck a stoppage-time equaliser as Paris Saint-Germain twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Barcelona.

Lionel Messi fired home just before the break to put the visitors 1-0 up but was substituted at half-time with what appeared to be a hamstring strain.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic then returned to haunt his former club when he equalised 11 minutes from time, but Xavi’s 89th-minute penalty appeared to have wrapped up the win for the La Liga leaders.

However, Matuidi had the final say when his low shot crept past Victor Valdes to leave the Champions League quarter-final tie level ahead of the return leg at Camp Nou next week.

The game inevitably prompted a flurry of activity from some big names on Twitter, and here are our favourites, in chronological order.

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski (@Podolski10) would rather be playing than… “Watching #Champions #League at home”

Former Norwich striker Darren Huckerby (@hucks6dh6) is impressed by Jordi Alba and Lucas Moura: “Good battle between Alba and Lucas so far, both could catch the chicken in Rocky 2 #PSGvBarca”

Swansea’s Wayne Routledge (@WayneRoutledge) kicks off the praise for Dani Alves after the Brazilian’s brilliant pass sets up Messi for the opener: “What a pass!”

QPR’s Jay Bothroyd (@jaybothroyd) chimes in: “What about the ball from Danny alves!!! Different”

Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva (@LucasLeiva87) praises his compatriot: “What a ball by @DaniAlvesD2”

Ex-Aston Villa man Ian Taylor (@IanTaylor7) is excited: “Goooaaallll!!! What a ball from Alves!! #messi #unreal #psg 0 #Barca 1”

As is David Cotterill (@cotterill_david): “1 chance 1 goal that’s all he needs!! #Messi #UCL”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) doesn’t think there’ll be a better pass this term: “Pass of the season from Alves, finished by, he who doesn’t need to be named.”

Arsenal’s Craig Eastmond (@craigleastmond) is also impressed: “That is a PASS but the finish #LeaveIt”

Marseille’s Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) adds his thoughts on the opener: “What a ball from Dani Alves. Messi, been quiet for half an hour, then bang.”

Lineker (@GaryLineker) is disappointed to learn that Messi is human: “Messi is off with what appears to be a hamstring strain. Messi is human. How disappointing!”

USA’s Jay DeMerit (@D6MERIT) thinks the same: “Did anyone else just see that? The camera showed Messi’s knee was bleeding. It wasn’t green so he IS human!! #Maybe”

Phil Neville (@fizzer18) is impressed by Thiago Silva’s display for PSG: “Haven’t seen many better centre backs than Thiago Silva this season?”

Lineker (@GaryLineker) adds some more praise for Alves: “Alves has been superb, and what’s more, his hair matches his shorts, socks and lower half of his shirt, beautifully.”

Huckerby (@hucks6dh6) is surprised the officials didn’t spot Ibrahimovic was offside for PSG’s leveller: “Zlatan 3 yards offside but game on #PSGvBarca”

As is Barton (@Joey7Barton): “Well offside, thought they have been poor tonight the officials. Got to spot blatant decisions like that. Game on now..”

West Brom’s Steven Reid (@stevenreid12) chimes in: “Just the 2 yards #offside #zlatan”

Ex-Liverpool man Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) can’t believe the referee awarded a spot-kick after Alexis Sanchez was fouled: “Fact so many say it was a stonewall pen says plenty about the current rules. Stick your foot into goalie, equals contact equals pen. Farce.”

Former Chelsea man Jody Morris (@morriskid) reacts after Xavi strokes home his penalty: “Xavi #Calm”

And Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) gives us his thoughts after PSG’s late, late equaliser: “2-2 last kick of the game for PSG it keeps the 2nd leg alive for Sky so Unbelievable Jeff will be pleased.”
