Jamie Carragher says Steven Gerrard is the best that the Liverpool centre-half has ever played with – although Luis Suárez is not far behind the Reds skipper.

Brendan Rodgers’s men secured a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa on Sunday, with striker Suárez drawing a foul from Nathan Baker to secure the penalty which allowed Gerrard to dispatch the winner.

The England captain has scored nine goals and made nine assists in the Premier League this season, turning back the clock with a series of virtuoso displays.

But Carragher reckons Suárez, who was unable to net his 23rd league goal of the campaign at Villa Park, is fast catching Gerrard in terms of his ability to win matches.

“I’ve played with a lot of top players here and I’ve always said Stevie is the best player I’ve ever played with but Luis is on his shoulder,” Carragher told the Liverpool Echo.

“He is close and we are all desperate for him to win Player of the Year and he deserves it. Every side has a couple of players who you hope can turn things for you and [Suarez] does it on a weekly basis.”
