Vincent Kompany was adamant Manchester City deserved their victory at Old Trafford after the visitors stalled Manchester United’s bid for the title.

City dominated the first half and took the lead six minutes after the break when James Milner rifled home a low deflected shot from just outside the box after Ryan Giggs’ careless back-heel gifted the visitors possession.

United drew level eight minutes later when Phil Jones’ header rebounded off Kompany and flew past Joe Hart.

But substitute Sergio Aguero had the final say when he weaved his way through the penalty area and powered a shot high above David De Gea as City closed the gap on the league leaders to 12 points.

“We didn’t give a lot of chances away and if you look at our overall play I thought we were the better team,” captain Kompany told Sky Sports.

“A derby is always a special game and for us to be able to win this game is massive. Our fans are celebrating and it’s a great night for us.

“We all worked very hard. They played very offensively; they have an unbelievable strike-force. We had to close the gaps and be tight to them and we did that very well.”

Kompany added: “I do believe that the way we finish this season is going to have an impact on next season.

“It’s always going to start from the beginning again and this is a good game to have under our belts and we’ll take it into next season.”

Man-of-the-match Milner revelled in the win as Roberto Mancini’s men gained revenge for their 3-2 defeat at Etihad Stadium earlier in the season.

“We wanted to come here and put in a performance and we deserved our win,” said Milner. “It’s always tough coming here. The aim is just to keep that momentum now until the end of the season.

“Regardless of where we are in the table, you want to beat your rivals. That’s the case for every game. We worked hard and got a good win.

“They’ve got such a good record at Old Trafford, they’re very tough to break down, they score a lot of goals here. We’re a bit disappointed to concede from a set-piece as I thought we defended very well.

“But I thought we deserved the win and to say that is a massively positive thing going into the weekend.”
