Man United transfers: Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants Rio Ferdinand to stay at Old Trafford with the defender's contract set to expire
Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand to pen a new deal at Old Trafford.
The 34-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and the centre-half has been linked with a move away from the 19-time English champions.
Ferdinand has impressed for the Red Devils this season despite managing a long-standing back problem, starting 24 Premier League games and helping his side keep seven clean sheets.
The England international has been awarded a testimonial at Old Trafford after making 424 appearances following a £29m move from Leeds United in 2002.
And Ferguson is confident Ferdinand will pen a new deal and further extend his decorated Red Devils career.
“I have spoken to Rio,” said Ferguson told ESPN.
“I would imagine the best thing for him would be to stay but at this moment in time he is more concerned about getting an opponent for his testimonial game.
“But we want him to stay and I am sure his representatives will be talking about that with (chief executive) David (Gill).”
