Man City’s James Milner: Man United’s title success only fuels the fire
Manchester City's James Milner says Manchester United's title triumph will motivate the Citizens to win back the crown next season
James Milner says Manchester United’s Premier League title triumph will only serve to fuel Manchester City’s desire to be champions next season.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men secured their 13th Premier League crown – and 20th top-flight title – with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Milner, who was part of City’s title-winning side in 2012, admits the Red Devils deserve to be crowned champions this season for a series of impressive performances.
But the former Leeds United youth graduate insists Roberto Mancini’s side will regroup over the summer and come back stronger next term as they look to reclaim their crown.
“It hurts,” Milner told Sky Sports. “Well done to Manchester United, they’re obviously a strong team and the league doesn’t lie, so they deserve the league.
“We’re massively disappointed, but it fuels the fire for next season and we’re desperate to go again next season to try and win it back.
“Hopefully we can finish this season with silverware.”
He added: “We’ve seen how hard it is to retain the title and how much they [United] used that disappointment from last season to drive them on this year.
“They’ve been very good in the league, very solid and seem to grind out results every week. They’ve deserved it and we have to look at where we’ve gone wrong and try to put that right.”
