Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United winger Ashley Young will be sidelined for two weeks after picking up an ankle problem in the derby on Monday night.

The England international received a knock on his ankle in closing moments of the 2-1 loss to Manchester City and will miss the club’s trips to Stoke City and West Ham United.

“Ashley is out,” said Ferguson. “He took a whack on his ankle. He will maybe miss two weeks.”

United’s lead at the top of the Premier League table was reduced to 12 points after Sergio Aguero’s winning strike helped close the gap on their bitter rivals.

But Ferguson did receive a boost ahead of a difficult clash against struggling Stoke City, with Paul Scholes set to return to first-team training after a three-month absence due to a knee injury.

“It will be a terrific boost to get his football intelligence back in the squad,” added Ferguson.

“He has been out for a few weeks so we need to get him back out training with us.”
