Man United’s Sir Alex Ferguson backs Robin van Persie to kick on
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson backs Robin van Persie to go on a goal-scoring run after ending his recent drought
Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Manchester United striker Robin van Persie to go on a goal-scoring run after ending his drought at Stoke City on Sunday.
The Netherlands international scored from the penalty spot in a 2-0 victory over the Potters at the Britannia Stadium, ending a run of 10 games without a goal.
Van Persie has netted 20 Premier League stikes this season, and Ferguson is backing the prolific finisher to kick on ahead of their clash against West Ham United at Upton Park on Wednesday night.
“There are always going to be question marks from the press – and particularly from the player himself – when a striker hasn’t scored for a few weeks,” Ferguson told MUTV.
“I know what strikers are like: when they are scoring they think they are going to score all the time, and when they’re not scoring they wonder when the next goal is going to come along.
“So it was a great goal for Robin [to score against Stoke] in that respect, and hopefully he kicks on from there.”
Van Persie has scored 24 goals in 42 appearances for the Red Devils after completing a £24m move to Old Trafford from Arsenal last August.
