Matt Taylor believes that West Ham United’s move to the Olympic Stadium will prove to be a crucial stepping stone towards future success.

The Hammers were confirmed as the main tenants of the Stratford arena last month and hope to move into the new ground in time for the start of the 2016-17 season.

And midfielder Taylor, who has scored one goal in 23 Premier League appearances for the Hammers this season, is adamant that the move is a wise one despite admitting it will be difficult to leave Upton Park behind.

“It’s a fantastic move for the football club,” Taylor told talkSPORT. “Obviously everybody loves Upton Park, and with the history it’s great to play there.

“Nowadays if you want to try and move the football club on, and maybe get to the next level, then we need to move to a bigger stadium to be able to attract bigger players and revenue.

“Football’s a business now and we all know that, and it’ll be sad to leave Upton Park but I would imagine that the majority of the fans are behind the decision to move.

“If I’m still at the football club then it’s going to be amazing to run out there and represent West Ham.”

The £429m stadium is set to be transformed into 54,000-seater arena after plans that include a new roof and retractable seating were unveiled.

West Ham, who have agreed a 99-year lease on the ground and will pay £2m a year in rent, will contribute £15m towards the stadium’s redevelopment costs of at least £150m.

Newham Council will invest £40m, while the government has agreed to provide additional support of up to £25m if required.
