Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard have been nominated for both the PFA player of the year and young player of the year awards.

Bale, 23, and Hazard, 22, join Michael Carrick, Robin van Persie, Luis Suárez and Juan Mata on the shortlist for the main prize.

And the Tottenham and Chelsea pair are also nominated for the young player accolade – for those aged 23 or under at the start of the season – along with Christian Benteke, Romelu Lukaku, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere.

Bale, who won the senior PFA award in 2011, has been in stunning form this season. He has netted 21 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions, including 17 in 27 starts in the Premier League.

Hazard, meanwhile, has 12 goals to his name in all competitions from his debut campaign in England and has made 27 league starts this term. His Chelsea team-mate Mata has netted 18 goals and made 25 assists for his team-mates.

Manchester United midfielder Carrick is the surprise inclusion on the six-man shortlist for the top prize, but PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor believes that the 31-year-old is more-than-worthy of his place on the list.

He said: “Michael is probably regarded as a players’ player because, although he doesn’t get the headlines, he is highly regarded by his fellow pros.”

Carrick has been ever-present in the heart of United’s midfield this season as Sir Alex Ferguson’s men push for a 20th top-flight title.

The England international has made 32 Premier League appearances this season, making four assists and scoring one goal.

Liverpool’s Suárez has scored 29 goals in 46 appearances for Liverpool this term and Taylor believes the Uruguayan fully deserves his place in the shortlist despite his past controversies.

“Sometimes controversy travels with players,” said Taylor. “Sometimes it is in their very nature. Sometimes it is that very intensity that causes a problem also makes sure they win.

“Luis Suárez is helping to restore Liverpool. It is a credit to them that he seems comfortable there and no one could deny he is one of the finest players in the world.”

Van Persie, who moved to Manchester United from Arsenal last summer and won the PFA award last year, has hit the ground running at Old Trafford, netting 25 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils.

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 28.
