Jay Rodriguez hailed a “massive” three points for Southampton after the Saints edged to victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

The former Burnley man was in sparkling form and was rewarded for his determination when he netted the opener after beating Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici to a through ball.

The Royals were left to rue a glaring miss by Adam Le Fondre in the first half before Saints captain Adam Lallana secured maximum points with a clinical 72nd-minute strike.

“It was massive. We just need to carry on working hard and improving until the end of the season,” said Rodriguez after watching Southampton move up to 11th in the table and seven points above the drop zone.

“Reading put us under pressure. They were playing really well. It was good timing for us. It was a good game and we scored some goals.”

Rodriguez, who scored in his third successive game, also praised manager Mauricio Pochettino’s impact, adding a run in the first-team has helped the striker produce his best form.

“I think a run in the team and gaining experience from playing – that’s what I need. I need games to improve my form and I just need to keep working hard,” he added.

“He gives us a belief – he’s very passionate. He’s very good at tactial situations. The team spirit is there and it’s a great feeling to be on the winning side.”

The 23-year-old also backed former Saints boss Nigel Adkins to be a success at Reading despite the 20th-placed Royals edging closer to the drop.

“He’s a great manager. He will do a fantastic job at Reading.”
