Jose Mourinho praised Real Madrid for a “serious” display after his side took a giant stride towards the Champions League semi-finals with a comprehensive win over Galatasaray.

Cristiano Ronaldo set the home side on their way with a wonderful dinked finish in the ninth minute, before Karim Benzema added a second on the half-hour mark.

Substitute Gonzalo Higuaín then made it three in the 73rd minute to give Los Blancos a comfortable lead heading into next week’s return leg in Turkey.

“We played seriously,” said Mourinho. “The Spanish press were not quite so respectful towards Galatasaray but we were very respectful towards them. We knew they have a fantastic team and good strikers.

“We were defensively better than we were attacking. We could have scored more goals but the team played well.”

Mourinho added: “If we score a goal in Istanbul then they have got to score five, so the result tonight is very good.

“But I’ve seen a lot of things in football so nothing can surprise me. Istanbul is a very difficult place to go and they will fight hard.

“I spoke to Didier Drogba, and also Wesley Sneijder, after the game because they are family – although not for 90 minutes.”
