Rubin Kazan 3 Chelsea 2: Rafael Benítez hails ‘professional’ display
Rubin Kazan 3 Chelsea 2: Rafael Benítez pleased with his side's "professional" display after they edged to a 5-4 aggregate win
Rafael Benítez insisted he was pleased with Chelsea’s “professional” performance after the Blues booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals despite suffering a defeat against Rubin Kazan.
Chelsea, who led 3-1 from the first leg, swept into the lead in the fifth minute through Fernando Torres’ lob, before Ivan Marcano’s levelled the score on the night just after half-time.
However, Victor Moses scored his eighth goal of the season 10 minutes after the break to see Chelsea through despite late strikes from Gokdeniz Karadeniz and Bebras Natcho.
“It doesn’t matter too much [about the result],” said the Chelsea interim boss after the 5-4 aggregate win.
“There were circumstances such as the [artificial] pitch so it was a professional job and I was pleased with the effort of the players.
“We needed an early goal and Fernando Torres has got another goal and so has Victor Moses.
“We are pleased to get through, but disappointed a little bit because we could have done a little better in defence.
“They were pushing and have players with quality, but the main thing for us was to progress.”
Chelsea face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday and Benítez admits he will be forced to rotate his squad.
He added: “We have to manage both games in the [Europa League and FA Cup. Some of them will not play on Sunday against Manchester City but we can carry on in different competitions which is good for the squad.”
