Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic Manchester United can eclipse Chelsea’s record 95-point haul ahead of their clash against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday.

The Red Devils can win their 20th top-flight crown by beating Paul Lambert’s men after Manchester City suffered a 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Chelsea reached 95 points in their title-winning campaign in 2005 – a Premier League record – while United’s best effort under Ferguson is 92 points.

The Red Devils must win their next five league games to beat Chelsea’s record and Ferguson is confident the 12-time Premier League champions can finish the season in style.

“If we win the league, the team has to be considered in terms of other teams. It’s not beyond the team [beating 95 points] at all,” Ferguson told ESPN.

“If you are asking if Manchester United can win five games in a row, well how many times have we done that? So it’s not beyond us.

“What may create more awareness of the side we have this year is how many points we get. We won the league in 1993 with something like 84 points. We have also won leagues with 91 points and been second with 91 points, to Chelsea.

“That has to be considered in terms of judgment against other teams, but it doesn’t bother me, really.”
