Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard: Luis Suárez is the best player in the league
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard hails Luis Suárez as one of the best players in the world but refuses to comment on his bite
Steven Gerrard has hailed Luis Suárez as the best player in the Premier League but refused to comment on the Liverpool’s striker’s bite on Branislav Ivanovic in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
The 26-year-old created the home side’s opening goal at Anfield with a deft pass which Daniel Sturridge clinically dispatched past Petr Cech, before scoring a header in the seventh minute of stoppage time to secure a point.
But the Uruguay international was the centre of a controversy after he clashed with Chelsea defender Ivanovic and appeared to bite the Chelsea centre-half – an action Suárez has since apologised for.
Gerrard opted against making a comment about the controversial incident, instead claiming that only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are better than Suárez.
“I’m not aware of the incident,” Gerrard told Sky Sports. “If there is clear footage then I’ll make a judgement and comment when I’ve seen it, and I haven’t seen it.
“I’d rather talk about his performance in the second half and his performances from day one this season. He’s been by far the best player in the league.
“He’s just behind Ronaldo and Messi as the best players in the world. I’ll talk all day about Suárez as a genius and a player.
“When you’re playing against Chelsea in big Premier League games, it’s going to get spicy. Other people want to talk about unsavoury incidents, but you’re going to get nothing out of me.”
