Stoke 0 Man United 2: Sir Alex reveals reason behind Rooney switch
Stoke 0 Man United 2: Sir Alex Ferguson deployed Wayne Rooney in central midfield in a bid to help striker regain his confidence
Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that he opted to deploy Wayne Rooney in a central midfield position in Manchester United’s win at Stoke City to help the forward rediscover some of his lost confidence.
Rooney starred in a man-of-the-match display at the Britannia Stadium as goals from Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie fired United a game closer to a 20th top-flight title.
Ferguson was full of praise for the England international after the game and admitted that the 27-year-old needed a confidence boost.
“I thought he was brilliant,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “I think that he was possibly needing a different role in terms of getting his confidence back.
“He’s been under a little bit of criticism, there were a few doubters but he’s a fantastic player and our job is to get that confidence and form back.”
Ferguson’s side now hold a 15-point lead over second-placed Manchester City with six games left to play.
And the Scot was thrilled with his United’s composed display at a blustery Britannia Stadium.
“The players today were fantastic,” he said. “I think they deserve all of the credit for their battling performance. The character of the team showed and they got what they deserve.
“We are a game closer – the important thing is not to take our eye off the ball. Coming here is always a difficult game, with the wind blowing the ball all over the place.
“But the players stood up to that, they persevered and it was an important victory.”
Manchester United travel to West Ham United in their next Premier League game on Wednesday night.
