Stoke 1 Aston Villa 3: Paul Lambert insists visitors were fully deserving of their victory after watching his side seal crucial win
Paul Lambert insisted Aston Villa were fully deserving of their victory at Stoke City after watching his side seal a crucial win in their battle for Premier League survival.
Gabriel Agbonlahor got the visitors off to the perfect start at the Britannia Stadium with a close-range finish after just nine minutes.
But Michael Kightly’s powerful strike brought Tony Pulis’ men level with just 10 minutes left to play.
However, Villa rallied late on and goals from Matthew Lowton and Christian Benteke gave Lambert’s men a vital win that hoists them into 16th place in the Premier League table and three points above the drop zone with six games left to play.
“It was thoroughly deserved,” Lambert told BBC Sport.
“We looked terrific from the off. I thought we defended really strongly and football-wise I thought we were excellent. Every time we went forward I thought we looked threatening.
“I don’t think you will see a better goal in Europe let alone anywhere else than Matt Lowton’s. The technique, chest control and volley was outstanding. He has played every minute of every game in the league and he has been outstanding.
“We are playing well. There is a lot of momentum there and collectively the players are doing fantastically.”
Villa host Fulham in their next Premier League fixture on 13 April.
Stoke boss Pulis conceded that Villa were the better team after they went ahead.
“We are disappointed,” he said. “I thought we started well and the first time they get in our box they score. From that point onwards Villa created the better chances in the game.”
