Andre Villas-Boas hailed Tottenham’s never-say-die attitude after watching his side mount a remarkable late comeback to beat Manchester City and boost their top four hopes.

Trailing from Samir Nasri’s fifth-minute opener at White Hart Lane, Tottenham battled back and drew level when Clint Dempsey drifted in at the far post to tap home Gareth Bale’s cross in the 75th minute.

Jermain Defoe then sent the home fans wild when he escaped the attentions of Vincent Kompany and curled a brilliant shot past Joe Hart.

And Bale, who was returning from an ankle injury, netted a superb third with neat finish over Hart to cap a stunning six-minute turnaround.

“I have to thank their team for their fighting spirit, they never give up,” said Villas-Boas, whose side are fifth but just two points behind third-placed Arsenal with a game in hand.

“Hopefully this gives us a push for the rest of the season.”

He continued: “It was a great game and the players did ever so well to come back into it.

“In the first half we didn’t play with confidence, but we always had the desire to come back into the game.

“In the second half everything changed and we played with more confidence. We found more spaces and we found the back of the net, deservedly.”

Asked about his side’s hopes of Champions League qualification, Villas-Boas added: “It’s very competitive and will probably go down to the wire.

“But you never know. It was important for us to win today as Arsenal play Manchester United next week.”

And the Spurs boss also had some more words of praise for his Welsh wizard after watching Bale net his 18th league goal of the season.

“Gareth [Bale] gave us to green light – he was fully prepared,” he said. “Physically he’s a monster and played 90 minutes, a great, great performance. Credit to him.”

Tottenham travel to Wigan Athletic for their next Premier League game on Saturday.
