Ulster’s Craig Gilroy still hurt by Ireland’s disappointing Six Nations

Ulster star Craig Gilroy admits he is looking forward to next year's Six Nations after a disappointing campaign this spring

Craig Gilroy admits he is already looking forward to next year’s Six Nations, claiming he’s desperate to right the wrongs of Ireland’s disappointing campaign this season.

Gilroy, 22, has enjoyed quite the breakthrough season, dazzling Fiji with a hat-trick in an uncapped match before helping Ireland down Argentina in the autumn.

He started four of Ireland’s Six Nations matches, missing the France clash but scoring in the defeat by Scotland at Murrayfield.

He was powerless to prevent Ireland finishing fifth though as defeats against England and Italy were also forthcoming, something that still sits uneasily with Gilroy.

“We knew we couldn’t win the competition (in Rome), but with the talk of it being a few players’ last game, we really wanted to prove something. It was probably the biggest disappointment,” Gilroy told the Irish Independent.

“I loved the Six Nations, despite not doing as well as we should have, I feel I had a lot more to show and prove, and still have lots to show in the future.

“It’s a fantastic competition, one I never thought I’d be playing in, and getting the opportunity to play with the likes of the guys that I did – the (Ronan) O’Garas and (Brian) O’Driscolls – was a great experience.

“I was privileged to play under Declan (Kidney). He’ll always be that coach for me who gave me a chance, which is special.”
