Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Champions League final after seeing off a late Real Madrid comeback to secure a 4-3 aggregate win at the Bernabeu.

Second-half substitute Karim Benzema made the breakthrough in the 82nd minute with a close-range finish before Sergio Ramos scored two minutes from time to give the home side a 2-0 lead on the night – but Dortmund held on to progress to next month’s Wembley showpiece.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, in chronological order, after a dramatic night in the Spanish capital.

Swansea goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel ‏(@GerryTremmel) still thinks Dortmund will go through after last week’s first leg: “Everyone expects Dortmund to go to the final. I think it will be very, very close today. Dortmund side is still a very young one.”

Manchester United defnder Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) can see the home side making a tie of it: “Can Real Madrid make the ultimate comeback tonight? Or will Dortmund produce what’s needed? I say Madrid to win but Dortmund to go through!”

Everton midfielder Phil Neville (‏@fizzer18) is shuddering at the demanding pace: “How quick are these ball boys getting the ball back??”

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany ‏(@VincentKompany) can see Dortmund causing Madrid more problems on the break: “Far too easy for Dortmund at the moment. Can Real come up with something special? Watch out for Dortmund’s speed on the break. #CL”

QPR winger Andros Townsend (‏@andros_townsend) can’t understand how Real haven’t scored: “How have Real Madrid not scored at least one goal in that first half!?”

Former Arsenal striker John Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) is impressed by Robert Lewandowski: “Lewandowski could easily play in England, loves the physical side of the game, been very impressive tonight..”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) hopes Madrid crash out to see Jose Mourinho edge closer to a Stamford Bridge return: “If Real Madrid go out tonight, will that give Jose even more time to start assembling next year’s Chelsea team??”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) isn’t a fan of Ramos’s overly physical approach to defending: “Sergio Ramos seems like a delightful chap!”

Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt (‏@MikePollitt12) hails his fellow shot stopper: “Diego Lopez!!”

Swansea’s Wayne Routledge (‏@WayneRoutledge) is enjoying the late drama as Benzema scores: “Hahaha! Amazing, you gotta love football for this…”

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is impressed by the centre-half’s finish: “WOW! What a strike. Ramos. What a game. Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker (‏@kyle28walker) is interested to see if Dortmund can hang on: “How’s your nerves now #championsleague!”

Ireland midfielder Keith Fahey ‏(@Keith_Fahey) is happy with the result: “Delighted to see Dortmund get through in the end.. #realdortmund”

Finally, QPR midfielder Esteban Granero ‏(@eGranero11) is proud of Madrid’s effort: “As a Madridista… I am very proud. Great team and great Bernabeu. #halamadrid”
