Sergio Aguero scored a stunning 79th-minute winner to help Manchester City secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

James Milner opened the scoring early in the second half but the Citizens were soon pegged back by Vincent Kompany’s own goal before Aguero’s sensational solo effort.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, to City’s derby success as they closed the gap on the Premier League leaders back to 12 points.

Ireland defender Sean St Ledger ‏(@seanstledger12) isn’t sure about the big-game build-up: “Will the #manchesterderby derby live up to the hype!!!?!”

Former Bradford manager Chris Kamara ‏(@chris_kammy) clears up any confusion for those new to the Premier League: “What a start to this game! Both teams playing at breath-taking pace, for those not watching Man U are in red & Man City are in Sky Blue -:)!”

Ex-Everton striker James Vaughan (‏@vaughany08) reckons Kompany has spared Jones’s blushes: “That’s an own goal and possibly miss of the season from Jones!”

Tennis legend Boris Becker (‏@TheBorisBecker) is glad to see the derby come to life: “Well….now we have a dogfight in Manchester!”

Ex-Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham ‏(@TSheringham1966) is left almost speechless by Aguero’s goal: “Wow…Unstoppable!”

Newcastle striker Papiss Demba Cisse (‏@CissePapiss) can still see United levelling: “Good goal Aguero!!! Now Man U will come back again??”

Ex-Aston Villa midfielder George Boateng ‏(@george1boateng) is glad Aguero added some quality to the derby: “Brilliant goal by #Aguero, this why I wanted to watch the Manchester derby, its 4:30am here in Malaysia. Worth staying up for!!”

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Jan Aage Fjortoft ‏(@JanAageFjortoft) points to Wayne Rooney’s poor form: “Says a lot about Rooney’s form when #mufc are desperate to get a goal and SAF takes him off.”

City’s Pablo Zabaleta (@pablo_zabaleta) was thrilled with the win: “Very proud of our team!! This is the only thing I can say now and thanks so much to the @MCFC fans for the massive support tonight!!!”

Finally, City captain Vincent Kompany (‏@VincentKompany) celebrates the victory: “Can’t stop scoring. Lol Phenomenal team performance! And to our fans.. #MCFC #MCFC #MCFC #MCFC #MCFC #MCFC #MCFC!! :-)”
