Arsene Wenger is convinced that Arsenal will secure Champions League qualification after watching his side move into fourth place with a vital win at West Brom.

Tomas Rosicky put the visitors 1-0 up in the 20th minute at the Hawthorns with an instinctive header after brilliant work by the in-form Gervinho on the left.

The Czech midfielder then doubled Arsenal’s lead five minutes after half-time to put the north Londoners in control.

However, Per Mertesacker was sent off for a foul on Shane Long in the box, with James Morrison converting the resulting penalty in the 71st minute to set up a tense finale.

But Wenger’s men held firm to secure a victory that hoists them above Chelsea in the table and just a point behind third-placed Tottenham.

“I believe we will do it,” said Wenger.

“We are conscious that it will demand 100 per cent commitment in every single game. It will be difficult and edgy until the end but the only thing I can say is that we are ready for a fight.

“Everybody looks at each other’s results but I believe sometimes that can get the focus away from your own performance.

“We always tell the players that we don’t focus on anybody else, just on us and perform well.”

West Brom boss Steve Clarke was convinced that his side deserved something from the game after they threw everything at Arsenal in the closing stages.

“Anybody who watched today’s game from the start would say if we got the equaliser it would have been thoroughly deserved,” he said. “We’re disappointed today but we will bounce back.”
