Alan Pardew: Tottenham will, but I don’t care if Arsenal thrash us
Alan Pardew risks upsetting Tottenham fans after the Newcastle United boss insists he "doesn't care" if Arsenal thrash his side
Alan Pardew has risked upsetting Tottenham fans after the Newcastle United boss insisted he “doesn’t care” if Arsenal beat his side next weekend in what could be a pivotal clash in the race for the top four.
Tottenham’s 2-1 win at Stoke City on Sunday hoisted them up into fourth place in the Premier League table ahead of the Gunners’ home game with Wigan on Tuesday night.
Arsenal can secure Champions League qualification at Tottenham’s expense if they win their remaining two matches.
But Pardew, who watched his side guarantee their Premier League safety with a 2-1 win at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, claims he is not bothered about the result.
“I don’t really care if Arsenal win 4-0 [next weekend], if I’m honest,” said Pardew on Sunday. “I’m sure Spurs will, but I only care that our fans enjoy themselves.”
However, the Magpies boss on Monday moved to clarify his comments, insisting they were meant as a “joke”.
“I know people will have picked up on my comments about not caring about the result against Arsenal, which were of course a joke,” Pardew told Newcastle’s website.
“It is definitely not the case that I would be happy for us to lose 4-0 against Arsenal on Sunday. I simply want our players and fans to be able to enjoy the game without looking over their shoulders.”
Newcastle are currently 13th in the Premier League table ahead of their final game of the season.
