Andre Villas-Boas insists it is still important for Tottenham to beat Sunderland on Sunday – even if Arsenal pip his side to a top-four finish.

Victory for Spurs against the Black Cats at White Hart Lane in their final game of the season will see Spurs finish on 72 points – a record points haul for the north Londoners in the Premier League era.

Arsenal can secure their spot in next season’s Champions League with a win at Newcastle but Villas-Boas wants Spurs to sign off on a positive note with a win, regardless of whether they are forced to settle for a fifth-place finish or not.

“The game against Stoke was good for us, it took patience and intelligence to win that game and I think it will be the same against Sunderland,” Villas-Boas told Spurs’ website.

“We have to do our job and independent of results elsewhere, we want the achievement of reaching 72 points. That’s important for us.”
