Andre Villas-Boas has challenged Tottenham to win their remaining three games and secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Spurs kept their top-four hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Southampton at White Hart Lane on Saturday, with Gareth Bale netting a sensational 86th-minute winner against his former club.

Tottenham travel to top-four rivals Chelsea on Wednesday in what could be a decisive game in the race for the European spots.

Spurs will be assured of a place in next season’s Champions League if they can win their last three games – against Chelsea, Stoke and Sunderland.

And Villas-Boas insists his side will give it their all as the top-four race hots up.

“It will be extremely difficult, but if we achieve these nine points we will be enjoying Champions League football next season,” said the Tottenham boss.

“That is our aim, but we understand that other teams are improving and it will probably go down to the wire.

“The three points gives us a wonderful opportunity against a team that is fighting for the same objectives as us.

“It wasn’t about the performance [against Southampton], it was about getting the result. Sometimes it has to be like that and the three points keeps us in the frame.”
