Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere will undergo a “very small” ankle operation at the end of the season – but moved to play down concerns over the Arsenal midfielder’s long-term fitness.

Wilshere was sidelined with an ankle problem earlier in the season and his manager has confirmed that the 21-year-old needs surgery to remove a metal pin used to provide support to his right foot.

The Arsenal boss, whose side face Wigan Athletic at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, said that he will only call on the England international if necessary in the club’s remaining two league games.

“Jack will have small, mild surgery,” said Wenger. “It is a very small, small, small one. It is to remove a small pin. It will not be a problem.

“He will need very minor surgery, but we manage that as far as we can until the end of the season. At the moment, we use him only in games when I feel he is really needed.”

Wenger also confirmed that the procedure is likely to rule Wilshere out of the forthcoming England friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

The Frenchman continued: “He won’t be available for England in the forthcoming friendlies, but he will be back for pre-season.

“Of course he is disappointed to miss the England game in Brazil, but he will go next year [to the World Cup finals]!”

Wilshere missed the whole of the 2011-12 season with ankle and knee trouble and only made his return to action for the Gunners in late October last year.
