Arsenal transfers: Wenger ‘very confident’ of signing Sanogo
Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is "very confident" of signing Auxerre forward Yaya Sanogo this summer
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is “very confident” of signing Auxerre forward Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer this summer.
The 20-year-old striker, who has scored eight goals in 11 appearances this season, is out of contract in June and the Gunners have been heavily linked with a swoop for Under-21 France international in recent weeks.
Arsenal have also been linked with an audacious bid for Wayne Rooney, who has expressed his desire to leave Manchester United.
But although Wenger played down the chances of the north Londoners making a move for the United striker, he revealed that the Gunners are on the verge of snapping up the French youngster.
“I don’t know if Manchester United will sell Rooney and that is the best sign to show you that we have not made any approach for him,” Wenger told a news conference.
“The first thing to do is to call Man United and we did not do [that].
“At the moment we are focused on Sunday [Arsenal’s game at Newcastle].
“For Sanarbo it is a bit different because he is free. He’s not linked with a club, he is out of contract.”
And Wenger added of Sanogo: “We are advanced with him but it is not done. I am very confident [of signing him]. He is a young, promising striker who is a big talent.”
